How to Compare Economic Indicators Between Countries
A practical guide to comparing GDP, inflation, unemployment, exchange rates and other indicators across countries — and the pitfalls to avoid.
Choose Comparable Indicators
Compare the same indicator across countries — GDP growth against GDP growth, inflation against inflation. Mixing indicators (for example, comparing one country's GDP growth with another's inflation rate) does not yield a meaningful comparison.
Use Real Values, Not Just Nominal
For growth comparisons, use real GDP growth (inflation-adjusted) rather than nominal growth. Otherwise, a country with high inflation may appear to be growing faster when it is simply experiencing rising prices.
Account for Country Size and Structure
A large economy and a small economy are not directly comparable on total output. Use per-capita measures (GDP per capita, wages per capita) or relative measures (growth rates, inflation rates) to compare living standards and performance.
Consider the Stage of Development
Emerging economies often grow faster than developed economies because they are catching up from a lower base. A 7% growth rate in a low-income country may be normal, while the same rate in a high-income country would be exceptional.
